50mph speed limit proposed for M20

Tuesday 18th March 2008

A 50mph speed limit could be brought in on part of the M20 to cut air and noise pollution at peak times. The measure, which would affect the stretch from junctions six to eight, is being put forward by Maidstone Council.

Operations director Alison Broom said they wanted to reduce pollution "to acceptable standards", after a report on nitrogen dioxide levels.

Boxley parish councillor Pat Brooks, who lives 70ft from the M20, said pollution was a major local concern.

Mrs Brooks, who has lived at Harbour Land Farm for 30 years, said:

"The noise is one of the worst things - we can never have the windows open."

She was subsequently given secondary double glazing by the Highways Agency when the number of lanes on the M20 increased.

But she said:

"If you clean the room-side of the double glazing, you get black coming off which can't be rinsed off, and it's grease and particles, and this goes for all the outside paintwork."

A 50mph limit during periods of heavy traffic flow would help encourage "a smoother flow and encourage vehicles to travel at a speed that's most efficient for using fuel", she added.
